About SUSI

Study of the United States Institutes are academic exchange programs of the US Department of State (Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs). The program web-page brielfy explains their purpose and modalities:

Scholar Institutes are designed to strengthen curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States overseas.

These Institutes host multinational groups of university faculty or secondary school educators. Each Institute is thematically focused on a field or topic of U.S. studies. Participants interact with American scholars, meet with experts in their disciplines, visit civic institutions, and explore the diversity and culture of the United States.

Scholar Institutes typically take place during the months of June, July, and August, with the exception of U.S. National Security which occurs in January and February.

The Study of the United States Institute on Foreign Policy takes place at the University of Florida, Gainesville.
Here is a brief excerpt of the topics covered and places visited during the program. Please take a look at the program homepage for more information.

The Study of the United States Institute on U.S. Foreign Policy will commence on June 8 and end on July 17, 2009. The Institute’s theme—“Domestic Sources of U.S. Foreign Policy: Beyond the Beltway, Behind CNN”—will be incorporated into a four-week academic residency program in Gainesville, Florida, and two weeks of study tours of three economically, demographically, and geographically-diverse loci of foreign policy-making: Miami, Chicago, and Washington, DC. Additionally, the Institute program will include daylong visits to Tampa, Orlando, Tallahassee, and historic St. Augustine.

Participants will learn from more than 30 experts in international affairs and U.S. politics, including scholars, diplomats, political leaders, lobbyists, and activists. The objectives of the Institute are that participants will acquire a solid grasp of competing analytical perspectives on U.S. foreign policy; gain knowledge of classic and recent writings on U.S. foreign relations; develop an appreciation for the complexity of the foreign policy-making process and the important role played by actors “beyond the beltway”; last but not least, acquire an enhanced understanding of the working of the U.S. academic and philanthropic foundation system, especially in the area of international studies.
